The result is a folding phone where it looks like the screen is folded flat in half, when it's not quite really. Two metal plates move under the screen, and when the phone is closed, part of the screen is tucked into the chin at the bottom. Motorola says the phone is splash resistant, but not waterproof. The power button on the side is textured, a nice touch. There is no headphone jack, but the phone comes with both a dongle and a premium set of USB-C earbuds. When the phone is closed, you can control it with Google Assistant. It shows time, date, and battery life it also works as a music controller, photo viewfinder, and displays notifications. On the outside, there's a 2.7-inch, 800-by-600 color external screen. The 6.2-inch screen is an unusually tall 21:9 aspect ratio, so Motorola provides an option to crop and zoom videos to fill the whole screen. It's properly balanced toward the bottom so it doesn't flip up and out of your hands. It's also much easier to type on than the unfolded Fold, as this phone is the width of a normal phone. When it's flat, the screen has no easily visible seam like the Samsung Galaxy Fold does-it looks terrific. Open it up, and there's a 2,142-by-876 folding AMOLED screen. But dropping fold Razr into my jacket pocket was a very old form of pleasure. If you use a fingerprint scanner, there's one on the phone's "chin." Closed, the only design issue is that the Tic Tac-shaped edges of the hinge at the top of the phone stick out a bit. It is completely possible to flip it open with one hand, levering your thumb in between the two halves, giving it a good shove, opening it up, and then slamming it closed with a satisfying slap. It isn't a charging stand, though, as there's no way to route a power cable through the bottom. The box is actually a stand, displaying the folded-open phone like a futuristic monolith. The Razr experience starts with a really cool box. Everything here is subordinate to the design, resulting in a phone that looks and feels like a $1,500 statement piece, but sure doesn't perform like one. ![]() The Razr has startlingly short battery life, a poor camera, and actually makes creaking noises when you open and close it. ![]() But to get it so thin, and for it to be able to work without overheating, the company made too many compromises on performance. Motorola took the Razr legacy seriously here, delivering a similarly slim, beautiful, fashionable device. Flash forward to 2020, and the new Razr is the coolest phone I've seen in years. I've been reviewing Razr phones since 2004, when they were arguably the first high-fashion handsets.
